Before we arrive
Shut off the main water valve
Turn it clockwise until it stops. That ends the damage right there. Don't know where yours is? Call us and we'll talk you to it.
Kill power to wet areas
Water and electricity can shock or kill. If you're not sure which breakers cover the wet area, shut off all the power.
Check where the water is going
If the burst is upstairs, look at the floor below. Water moves fast through ceilings.
Get wet things out
Rugs, furniture, books: take them out of the house onto a tarp in the garage or on the lawn. Mold can start in as little as 24 hours.
Air it out
Open windows. If the power in that area is safely on, run fans. Start on standing water with a wet vac if you have one.
Stop the toilet
Lift the tank lid and press the flapper
Set the lid somewhere dry. Push the rubber flapper at the bottom of the tank closed to stop water flowing into the bowl.
Lift the float
This stops the tank from refilling. The bowl should drop back to normal in about a minute.
Still rising? Close the supply valve
It's on the wall or floor behind the toilet. Turn it clockwise. Then towels down, and give us a call.
Smell gas?
Leave the house now. From outside, call your gas utility or 911. Don't flip switches, use the phone inside, or light anything. When the utility says it's safe, call us for the repair.
